Satellite tracking
For the LIFE Project „Conservation of Aquila Pomarina in Romania” the members of the Milvus Group Association for the Protection of Birds and Nature managed to capture three adult and three juvenile A. pomarina in SPA Podisul Hartibaciului in 2010. The birds were equipped with satellite transmitters (Microwave 45 g Solar Argos/GPS PTT-100s) which helped us monitor their movements with the help of the Argos system. For one year, the transmitters have sent data about their nesting area, the use of the habitat, their migration route and their wintering site. Two of the six transmitters are still sending the specialists data which are very important for our species conservation effort. This year the Milvus Group Association team has managed to capture eight lesser spotted eagles (five juvenile and 3 adults) which they equipped with new satellite transmitters. The birds were captured in two of the key project Natura 2000 sites: SPA Dealurile Târnavelor Valea Nirajului and SPA Podișul Hârtibaciului. They were also marked with aluminium rings and with colour-coded rings.
In July 2011 a mixed team of specialists from the Romanian Ornithological Society, the Milvus Group Association and the Sibiu Regional Environmental Protection Agency have captured, ringed and equipped with satellite transmitters five lesser spotted eagles in SPA Piemontul Fagaras. The satellite transmitters were mounted on two adults (named Bunget and Narcis) and three juveniles (Lisa, Negură and Gură de Aur)
Transmitters
The GPS PTTs mounted on the 13 birds in 2011 will report the birds’ location with 18 meters accuracy and will register data every two hours between 6.00 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day. The transmitters also send us data about altitude, speed and flight direction.

It is the nestling of Arthur, juvenile female, equipped with transmitter and ring marked on 22 July 2010, close to Bîrghiş in the county of Sibiu. On the date when it was equipped with the transmitter it weighted 1220 grams.

The nest of this pair of eagles was identified in the summer of 2010.
The transmitter is operating well. According Based on the date provided we could establish the exact size of the occupied territory, the bird’s coverage area and the most important feeding grounds.

The territory occupied by the eagles in this area has been known for a couple of years but the nest was only identified in February

Althout the territory of this pair of eagles had been known since 2006, the current nest was only identified in the summer of 2010.
Arthur’s transmitter has been operating very well and due to the provided data we could outline the exact territory used, the bird’s main area of activity and the most important food finding areas.

Juvenile ring marked in its nest. It was equipped with a transmitter on 16 July 2010 close to Iacobeni in the county of Sibiu. When it was equipped, Jakab weighted 1250 grams.
The pair’s territory had been known since 2005 and the nest identified in February 2010.
After a long period of only short distance trips inside the forest, close to the nest, on 23 August the juvenile provided the first GPS coordinates from a bit longer distances.
